North Highlands Fire Contained to Garage, Two Cats Perish

Sacramento County, CA – Just before 3:00 pm, Metro Fire crews were dispatched to a single-story home on the 5000 block of Cherokee Way in North Highlands for a report of a garage fire. The first arriving engine found a garage, well-involved with fire, and immediately initiated fire attack, while additional crews began searching the residence for victims.

The elderly homeowners had been able to self-rescue, but their two cats perished in the fire. Firefighters located the cats, carried them out of the home and attempted to revive one, with no success.

The twenty-five firefighters on scene contained the fire to the garage, saving the living quarters and attic from fire and protecting a nearby home from fire spread. Though the garage was completely destroyed, the interior of the residence and the couple’s belongings sustained smoke damage only. No firefighters were injured fighting the fire and the total damage is estimated at $50,000. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
