Metro Fire to Dedicate Fire Station in Honor of Fallen Fire Captain and Army Veteran

Florin, CA – The Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District (Metro Fire or the District) will dedicate and name Fire Station 51 in honor of Fire Captain Michael George, who passed away on April 16, 2009 from duty related illness. This event will occur at 10:00 am at the station located at 8210 Meadowhaven Drive on September 5, 2019.

Members of Captain George’s family will be in attendance as a plaque attached to the station is unveiled by District personnel and Sacramento Area Fire Fighters Local 522 Honor Guard members, with remarks by Fire Chief Todd Harms.

Prior to being hired in 1972 as a dispatcher and promoting to Captain in 1983 with the Florin Fire Department, which subsequently became part of Metro Fire, Captain George served two tours in Vietnam as a helicopter pilot in the United States Army. During his military service he earned a Purple Heart, Air Medal, Bronze Star, and the Distinguished Flying Cross.

As part of an effort to recognize the sacrifice of the twenty two firefighters from Metro Fire and our predecessor agencies who have given their lives on behalf of the Sacramento Communities we serve, this honor will be bestowed upon all members declared to have passed from Line of Duty Death (LODD). Captain George will be the second member to receive this honor.
