Community Risk Reduction Division

The Community Risk Reduction Division (formerly Fire Prevention Bureau) is responsible for protecting the public through coordinated efforts in fire prevention, code enforcement, fire protection engineering, fire and life safety education and fire investigation.

In coordination with the Sacramento County Project Review Committee and Sacramento County Building Department, Metro Fire Inspectors streamline new project development. Inspectors assist the business community through planning phases of new construction projects, recording of maps and granting of final occupancy. This partnership along with early resolution, reviewing plans for construction projects, and testing and inspection for those projects is crucial to encouraging new development within the County of Sacramento.

Fire departments are challenged with renovations, conversions, and alterations in well-established communities. Metro Fire Inspectors work diligently to provide safe living and working environments for the community. This is accomplished by ensuring new buildings are built in a manner consistent with regulation and standard practice. Additionally, Inspectors ensure buildings are properly maintained by responding to code violation complaints and through code enforcement inspections of existing buildings.

The Metro Fire CRRD is committed to fostering informed and prepared communities. CRRD Community Risk Educators assist the business community in being active participants in their fire safety by providing fire extinguisher training, evaluating fire drills, and assisting with emergency evacuation plans. Community Risk Educators also provide burn and fire prevention education to youth through educational programs, fire station tours, school visits, the Juvenile Fire Setters program and Fire Camp.

The Metro Fire Investigation Unit works in collaboration with a multitude of agencies within Sacramento County to provide investigation and enforcement capabilities. They participate with local law enforcement to assist with education and mitigation of fires and injuries caused by fireworks. Additionally, in the event a fire occurs, the Metro Fire Investigation Unit works closely with suppression personnel to conduct fire cause and origin investigations. The Fire Investigation Unit works hand in hand with CRRD to evaluate fire protection system and fire-resistive construction deficiencies or failures occurring in fire events. Inspectors also evaluate the extent of fire damage and the safety of the building to determine the possibility of occupancy. The CRRD Division further supports business owners that have experienced a fire through the process of rebuilding to expedite the return of normal business operations.
