Citrus Heights, CA – Just after 12:30 this morning, Metro Fire crews were dispatched to the 7600 block of Greenback Lane in Citrus Heights for an apartment fire, with report of residents trapped. First arriving crews reported fire showing from the second floor of a two-story apartment building and quickly initiated fire attack.

During firefighting operations, life safety is the top priority, and every second counts. With a report of people trapped, crews immediately launched an aggressive search for victims, quickly rescuing one child from the fire unit and two residents trapped on the balcony of an adjacent unit. The child, and two adults who had self-rescued prior to arrival, sustained significant injuries and were transported to local hospitals. The two residents rescued from the adjacent balcony were uninjured. Two Citrus Heights Police officers suffered minor injuries; both were assessed and released at scene.

Two apartments were damaged by fire, with three additional units damaged by smoke and water. Residents of all five units were displaced; Red Cross was requested to assist them. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation, with total damage estimated at $200,000.

Our thoughts go out to everyone injured in this fire, with hopes for a speedy recovery for all.
