One Dog Perishes in Bradshaw Road House Fire

Sacramento County, CA – Just after 4:30 this morning, Metro Fire crews responding to the 8100 block of Bradshaw Road found a working fire in a single-story home. They quickly initiated fire attack, while ventilating and searching for victims.

During firefighting operations, life safety is the top priority, and every second counts. With heavy fire and the appearance of occupants home, firefighters immediately launched an aggressive search for victims. They performed Vent-Enter-Search in multiple bedrooms, with search crews making access through exterior windows as fire attack was occurring in other parts of the home. No residents were found to be home, though one dog was located during the search. Crews removed him, but he had already succumbed to the smoke.

With heavy fire, the potential for rescues, a significant distance to the nearest hydrant, and a long, dirt driveway creating access challenges, two extra fire engines and one medic were requested. A total of 34 firefighters worked seamlessly to extinguish this fire.

One firefighter sustained minor injuries and was transported to a local hospital. The home sustained extensive smoke and fire damage, with preliminary damage estimated at $200,000. Fire investigators on scene have determined the fire started in the kitchen/living room area, with the cause still under investigation.

Smoke alarms do save lives! Almost 2/3 of home fire deaths are in homes with no working smoke alarms. Protect your family; test your smoke alarms every month, and change the batteries when you change your clocks.
