Metro Fire Team Leads MOVEMBER Fundraising Campaign for Third Year

Sacramento County, CA – A pink fire engine, firefighters growing moustaches for “MOVEMBER,” you may wonder why Metro Fire is so passionate about Cancer Awareness. Because firefighters are exposed to the effects of cancer every day: in the patients we treat, in our own families, and in our fellow fighters. In 2008 and 2009, occupational cancer took the lives of two of our own: Captain Jim Peterson and Captain Michael George. Both men are listed on the California Firefighters’ Line of Duty Death Memorial Wall.

MOVEMBER is about men growing moustaches for the month of November, sparking conversations regarding men's health and cancer, specifically the high numbers of prostate and testicular cancers, and the critical need for early detection. For our own Captain Bob Bruce, who has battled cancer for the past ten years, this message hits close to home.

Two years ago, Captain Bruce started a Movember fundraising campaign here at Metro Fire, raising over $7,500 for the cause. In 2015, he pushed even more…. entering Metro Fire into the Movember First Responder Challenge, where the men and women of Metro Fire, families, friends and citizens of Sacramento County raised over $32,000.00 for the cause. And yes, Team Metro Fire won the First Responder Challenge by a landslide.

Captain Bruce (pictured below with his son) is fighting cancer once again, but that hasn’t stopped us from carrying on his tradition. Our goal is to raise even more awareness, and funds, this year. Cancer doesn’t go away when October ends; our efforts at Metro Fire will not either. Track our fundraising and check out pictures of our firefighters’ moustaches on Metro Fire’s Movember website:
