MILO & MOXIE- SMART SAFETY RANGERS CLASSROOM EDUCATION PROGRAM
“I’m Milo the dog, a smart safety ranger. Here to help you learn how to stay away from danger.”
Because children are the most vulnerable group for burn and scald injuries, Metro Fire is proud to bring you the Milo & Moxie – Smart Safety Rangers Classroom Education Program. The campaign works to educate children about preventing burn injuries and teaches them how to be fire safe in their homes.
According to Safe Kids Worldwide, in 2012, more than 136,000 children across the country, including more than 67,000 children 4 and under, were injured due to a fire and burn treated in emergency rooms. Scald burns, caused by hot liquids or steam, and contact burns are the most common types of burn-related injuries among young children.
Milo the dog and Moxie the hummingbird story-time curriculum uses a rhyming technique to teach safety lessons while keeping the kids attention. The interaction between the characters helps to move the story through each room of their home, hitting on key fire and burn prevention messages. “If reading a story to a class of young children can prevent even one burn, then it’s worth it,” said Metro Fire Chief Todd Harms. “But we should remember, it’s not only the child’s responsibility to be safe; parents have to take measures to prevent burns. Please take time to prevent injuries by keeping young children out of the kitchen and never leave cooking unattended.”
