Across Sacramento County, fire service Explorer, Cadet, and Fire Technology programs provide young people with hands-on experience, mentorship, and career pathways into the fire service. These programs emphasize leadership, teamwork, physical fitness, and community service—while introducing students to real-world fire and EMS operations.
What Are Explorer & Cadet Programs?
Fire Explorer and Cadet programs are career development programs for youth (typically ages 14–20) designed to introduce participants to fire service careers through structured training and mentorship.
Participants can expect:
· Hands-on fireground skills training
· Exposure to EMS and rescue operations
· Leadership and teamwork development
· Community service opportunities
· Career readiness and mentorship
Fire Technology & Career Pathway Programs
Del Campo High School Fire Technology Program:
· Introduction to fire science and emergency services
· Career exploration in firefighting and public safety
· Ride time with Metro Fire
· BLS CPR and First Aid Certification
· Dual Enrollment with ARC in Fire Tech and EMT
· Wildland S-110, S-130, S-190 and L-180
· Meets A-G College Graduation Requirements
· HazMat
· Located in Fair Oaks within the San Juan Unified School District
American River College Fire Technology Program:
· Associate degrees and certificates
· Firefighter academy preparation
Cosumnes River College Fire Technology Program:
· Fire Technology degrees and certificates
· Career-focused training for fire service employment
City of Sacramento Firefighter Youth Academy (SFYA):
· 9-month structured academy
· Weekly training sessions
· CPR and first aid certification
· Fire suppression and rescue skills
· Physical fitness and leadership development
Cosumnes Fire Department Explorer Program:
· Classroom and hands-on fire/EMS training
· Leadership and teamwork development
