Our EMS Program

ABOUT OUR METRO MEDIC PROGRAM (MMP)

The image features emergency responders in a fire station with an ambulance and medical equipment.

In addition to Firefighters, Metro Fire also employs EMTs and Paramedics that are assigned to non-suppression ambulances to meet the growing needs of our communities. Once hired as a licensed EMT or Paramedic, a recruit goes through the EMS academy to prepare for a successful career at Metro Fire. The Metro Fire EMS Academy instructs recruits in a range of emergency response skills including essential and advanced EMS tasks, basic and advanced life support operations, multi-casualty incident operations, vehicle extrication and other mandated skills as part of the California and Sacramento County EMT and Paramedic Scope of Practices.

The MMP academy is 6 weeks and encompasses extensive hours in scenarios, on the drill ground and in the classroom, combining the knowledge and skills critical for performing EMS operations at emergency medical incidents, motor vehicle accidents, and more. Academy staff trains recruits in the skills needed to be successful in their careers and works to instill Metro Fire’s core values of Integrity, Professionalism, Teamwork, and Devotion to Duty.

Metro Fire is looking for compassionate and dedicated  EMTs and Paramedics to join our EMS team. Metro Fire serves a large and diverse population in Sacramento and Placer County. We are responsible for 720,000 residents and 359 sq. miles. Our MMP personnel work a 48-hour schedule with additional overtime opportunities in a dynamic and challenging EMS system. Our MMP ambulances are assigned to and respond from our fire stations. Our MMP crews work, train, and live alongside our firefighters while on duty at the firehouse. The schedule is the same 2 days weekly with 24’s on/off/on/off/off/off/off. For example; Tuesday and Thursday each week.

Our medic program was designed to develop EMS professionals and expose members to the fire service. We have successfully transitioned over 175 EMS providers to fire suppression positions. Members who join our team will have the opportunity to advance within their EMS career and/or transition to our fire suppression academy.
